What is local SEO (and why does it matter)?

Local SEO is about getting your business seen by nearby customers who are ready to act. It focuses on improving your visibility in local search results — including Google Maps, the local map pack, and location-based queries like “plumber near me” or “best dentist in South Brisbane.”

Whether you have a brick-and-mortar office or service a region, local SEO helps you:

We handle everything from setting up and optimising your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listings to building local citations, improving location signals, and creating locally focused content that helps your business stand out in the areas that matter most to you.

Because at the end of the day, there’s not much point in ranking nationally if your best customers are five suburbs away.

Your customers are searching for what you offer in your local area — are you showing up?

When people need a local service, they don’t flick through the Yellow Pages anymore. They Google it, compare their options, and usually, make a decision pretty quickly. If your business mainly relies on more local customers, local SEO isn’t something you can afford to overlook.

If your business isn’t appearing in the Google Map Pack or local results, your competitors are getting those clicks and calls.

Local SEO isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s one of the best ways to get your business in front of customers.

Your Google Business Profile should never be an afterthought

We’ll keep screaming it from the rooftops until businesses finally start paying attention: your Google Business Profile is one of the most underrated tools in not just local SEO campaigns, but your entire digital marketing strategy, and most businesses are only scratching the surface of what it can actually do.

It’s what shows up when someone searches your business name, looks for services “near me”, or compares businesses in Google Maps. And when it’s properly optimised, it can become one of your biggest sources of calls, clicks, bookings, and direction requests.

Most businesses set up their Google Business Profile once, chuck on a few blurry photos, forget about it for three years, then wonder why competitors keep showing up first.

We help optimise every part of your profile, from categories and service areas to imagery, keywords, FAQs, products, and regular updates. We also help you build stronger reviews and improve engagement so your profile doesn’t just exist, it actually works hard for your business.

Because when someone’s comparing three local businesses in Google Maps, the one with the stronger profile usually wins the click.

Have a question about local SEO?

Think of regular SEO as casting a wide net and local SEO as a speargun, precise, targeted, and built for a specific kind of catch.

Regular SEO focuses on ranking your website for broad, topic-based search terms regardless of where the searcher is located. It’s about authority, content depth, backlinks, and competing on a national or global scale.

Local SEO is specifically about ranking for searches with local intent, so people in your area looking for services in your area, right now. It’s more focused on Google Business Profile optimisation, citation building, location-based content, Map Pack ranking, and review management.

Most businesses start to see results within a few months, but full improvements can take six to 12 months, depending on your current online presence and the competition in your industry.

Not necessarily, but it helps to understand how Google thinks about this.
Google’s Map Pack is built around location. When someone searches “accountant in Toowong,” Google is looking for businesses it can easily place in or near that area.

A verified physical address gives Google a clear, confirmed location signal, which makes it easier to rank in the Map Pack for suburb-specific searches.
That said, if you work from home or travel to your clients, you’re not locked out. Google allows you to set up a service area business on your Google Business Profile, where instead of displaying an address, you list the suburbs or regions you serve. Plenty of tradies, consultants, and mobile service providers rank well this way.

Citations are online mentions of your business across directories and listing sites like Yellow Pages, TrueLocal, Yelp, and industry-specific platforms. They typically include your business name, address, phone number, and website.

It’s best to think of them like your digital references. The more reputable places your business appears with consistent, matching details, the more confident Google is that you’re a legitimate, established business worth showing to people searching nearby.

And, the flip side matters just as much. An old address on one directory, a different phone number on another, or a business name that doesn’t quite match are all inconsistencies that create doubt in Google’s eyes. And when Google isn’t sure, it plays it safe and ranks someone else instead.

You definitely can. If you serve multiple areas, you don’t have to choose just one. We build out location-specific pages for each suburb or region you want to rank in, optimised with the right local keywords and useful content for people in that area. We also ensure your Google Business Profile service areas are set up correctly and that your citations reflect your full coverage area.

The key is doing this properly. Creating thin, copy-paste location pages that just swap out the suburb name is a tactic that used to work, but no longer does. Google is smart enough to spot it and savvy enough to penalise it. We build location pages that are valuable, locally relevant, and built to rank.

Google Business Profile powers your visibility across Google Search and Google Maps, making it the biggest player in local SEO.

Bing Places works similarly, but for Bing’s search engine and map results. While Bing has a smaller share of the market, it still attracts millions of users and can be particularly valuable for older audiences, desktop users, and some B2B markets.

Having both set up properly helps ensure a strong online presence and keeps your business information consistent across platforms.
