You’ll hear it time and time again — SEO is all about the long game. It’s about remaining consistent. It’s not something you can turn on and off, and expect to retain results.

But just how important is SEO consistency for real businesses?
Is turning off an SEO campaign really the beginning of the end, or just a bump in the road?

We set out to find the answer.
Anecdotally, we always knew consistent SEO delivered better long-term results.

But we wanted to back it up with hard data, not just gut feeling.

So, we crunched the numbers.

To test the theory, we analysed SEO performance across two key industries:

In each industry, we compared:

By tracking keyword rankings, organic traffic, and visibility over time, we uncovered some pretty compelling insights about the true impact of SEO consistency.

Professional Services 👩‍💼

For our Professional Services comparison, we compared a copier business with a legal firm. Where the legal firm remained consistent with SEO over a four-year period, the copier business came on board and off board with us twice in that time.

Monthly organic growth rate with a small tree representing 7% for professional services and a larger tree representing 39% for legal firms

Over the four years, the legal firm saw a 39% increase in monthly organic traffic. The copier business saw just 7%.

Two graphs, one showing steady, consistent growth for the legal firm and another with choppy, up and down growth for the professional services business

Predictive traffic is the amount of traffic that SEO tool Ahrefs predicts you can gain with the keywords you’re ranking for. Where the legal firm moves in an upward direction quite steadily, you can see the copier business sees big jumps and falls in their predictive traffic for the same period.

Two graphs showing keyword rankings, the legal firm has 1,435 and the professional services business has 75

At the end of the period, the legal firm had a total of 1,435 keywords, whereas the copier business had just 75.

A keyword distribution graph, with negligible results for the professional services business and many keywords across all segments of positions for the legal firm

Of those ranking keywords, you can see the difference in keywords appearing on the first page for the legal firm, versus the copier business, which has most keywords ranking in positions 20 to 50.

* Data was sourced over a four-year period, tracking from 2021 to 2025.

Home Improvement Services 🔨

For our Home Improvement Services comparison, we compared a landscaping business with an outdoor maintenance business. Where the landscaping business remained consistent with SEO over a five-year period, the outdoor maintenance business came on board and off board with us twice in that time.

Monthly organic growth rate, a small tree represents outdoor maintenance at 3% and a larger tree represents a landscaping business at 71%

Over the five years, the landscaping business saw a 71% increase in monthly organic traffic. The outdoor maintenance business saw just 2% increase.

A predictive traffic graph shows steady and consistent growth for the landscaping business while the outdoor maintenance business has choppy, up and down growth

Predictive traffic is the amount of traffic that SEO tool Ahrefs predicts you can gain with the keywords you’re ranking for. Where the landscaping business moves in a consistently upward direction, you can see the outdoor maintenance business fluctuates significantly over the period.

Graphs show the total number of ranking keywords for both businesses. The landscaping business is tall with 950 keywords whereas the outdoor maintenance business is shorter with 365

At the end of the period, the landscaping business had a total of 950 keywords, whereas the outdoor maintenance business had 365.

A keyword distribution graph, with much lower results, moreso in the lower rankings for the outdoor maintenance business and many keywords across all segments of positions for the landscaping business

Of those ranking keywords, you can see the difference in keywords appearing on the first page for the landscaping business, versus the outdoor maintenance business, which has most keywords ranking in positions 20 to 50.

* Data was sourced over a five-year period, tracking from 2020 to 2025.

The results were clear

✅ Consistent SEO builds unstoppable momentum.

Long-term clients saw steady growth in search rankings, greater traffic, and stronger brand visibility – even through competitive market changes.

❌ Inconsistent SEO creates lasting setbacks.

Short-term clients who paused their SEO campaigns experienced rapid declines in rankings and traffic, and found it much harder (and slower) to regain their previous positions.

The more often SEO was paused, the steeper the declines became — and the greater the effort needed to rebuild.

📈 Keyword growth

Businesses with consistent SEO investment saw an average of 45% increase in top 10 keyword rankings over time, while those with inconsistent SEO campaigns suffered a 30% drop in rankings after pausing their efforts.

👀 Visibility

The businesses with consistent SEO showed stability and gradual improvement in their visibility, while inconsistent SEO businesses faced volatility and visibility losses.

👉 Recovery after pause

Businesses that stopped SEO efforts found it costly and time-consuming to recover lost ground.

Consistency matters more than ever

SEO is fast-moving — it’s not a set-and-forget strategy.

It’s a long-term investment in your business’s future visibility, authority, and growth.

When you stop investing, you lose momentum and give your competitors a head start.

Our findings show that consistent, ongoing SEO is critical for building a strong, resilient online presence that stands the test of time.
