You’ll hear us say it again and again: SEO is about the long game. Consistency matters, and switching it on and off can cost you results.
Think of it like going to the gym. Stick to a routine, and you’ll see progress. Take three months off, and you risk losing the gains you’ve made.
But how much does consistency really matter for SEO? Is pausing a campaign a major setback or just a bump in the road?
We wanted more than gut feeling to answer that. So, we crunched the numbers and took a closer look at one client’s campaign to see what the data tells us.
Table of Contents
ToggleTL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read) 👇
- We compared long-term and stop-start SEO clients to see what consistency actually does to performance.
- The consistent clients grew monthly organic traffic by 39% and 71%. The stop-start clients managed 7% and 2%.
- We saw stable growth from businesses that stayed consistent, even in competitive markets.
- And the more SEO was paused, the more momentum was lost, making recovery slower and harder.
A real-world comparison 🌏
To test the theory, we analysed SEO performance across two key industries:
- Professional services (insurance law vs copier leasing)
- Home improvement services (landscaping vs outdoor maintenance)
In each industry, we compared:
- A long-term client who invested consistently in SEO
- A short-term client who switched SEO on and off across short bursts
By tracking keyword rankings, organic traffic, and visibility over time, we uncovered some pretty compelling insights about the true impact of SEO consistency.
Professional Services 👩💼
For our Professional Services comparison, we compared a copier business with a legal firm. While the legal firm remained consistent with SEO over a four-year period, the copier business came on board and off board with us twice in that time.
Over the four years, the legal firm saw a 39% increase in monthly organic traffic. The copier business saw just 7%.
Predictive traffic is the amount of traffic that SEO tool Ahrefs predicts you can gain with the keywords you’re ranking for. Where the legal firm moves in an upward direction quite steadily, you can see the copier business sees big jumps and falls in their predictive traffic for the same period.
At the end of the period, the legal firm had a total of 1,435 keywords, whereas the copier business had just 75.
Of those ranking keywords, you can see the difference in keywords appearing on the first page for the legal firm, versus the copier business, which has most keywords ranking in positions 20 to 50.
* Data was sourced over a four-year period, tracking from 2021 to 2025.
Home Improvement Services 🔨
For our Home Improvement Services comparison, we compared a landscaping business with an outdoor maintenance business. While the landscaping business remained consistent with SEO over a five-year period, the outdoor maintenance business came on board and off board with us twice in that time.
Over the five years, the landscaping business saw a 71% increase in monthly organic traffic. The outdoor maintenance business saw just a 2% increase.
Where the landscaping business moves in a consistently upward direction, you can see the outdoor maintenance business fluctuates significantly over the period.
At the end of the period, the landscaping business had a total of 950 keywords, whereas the outdoor maintenance business had 365.
Of those ranking keywords, you can see the difference in keywords appearing on the first page for the landscaping business versus the outdoor maintenance business, which has most keywords ranking in positions 20 to 50.
* Data was sourced over a five-year period, tracking from 2020 to 2025.
The results were clear
✅ Consistent SEO builds unstoppable momentum
Long-term clients saw steady growth in rankings, traffic and visibility – even through competitive market changes. On average, their top 10 keyword rankings grew 45%.
❌ Inconsistent SEO creates lasting setbacks
Clients who paused saw rankings drop 30% on average, and found it costly and slow to recover lost ground. The more often they paused, the steeper the declines became.
What consistency looks like up close: PromoPAL 🏋️♀️
The numbers show what can happen when businesses stick with SEO. But what does that ongoing work look like, and what kind of results can it deliver?
Let’s take a closer look at PromoPAL, a Brisbane business supplying promotional products across Australia.
We built them a new website that launched in February 2021, then kicked off a campaign combining SEO and Google Ads – a winning combo we often recommend.
We love a good testimonial from our clients, but they’re even better when the client questions whether their success is normal.
“As for the increase in organic traffic, this is great! Out of curiosity, is this the same rate of improvement you see generally?” – Nick Letts, PromoPAL

Here’s what we did 👇
Local SEO 📍
A new physical location on Google Business Profile tripled PromoPAL’s views to 929 in late 2022. Local search clicks to their website went from 18 in September to 60 in October.
Content & keywords ✍️
Keyword-rich content marketing for their core products solidified the rankings that matter most.
On-page SEO 📃
We updated title tags and meta descriptions, heading tags and internal links to help Google find and understand each page.
Off-page SEO 🔗
We generated local citations on directories like YellowPages and Hotfrog, got broken backlinks reinstated, and made link building a big part of the strategy.
SEO is all about that snowball effect ❄️
Think of SEO like super. The longer you invest, the more those gains build on each other.
We get it. The first three to six months can feel slow, but once results start coming in, they can build momentum. Rankings improve, traffic grows, other websites start linking to yours, and your authority strengthens.
That’s what the legal firm and landscaping business experienced, and what the stop-start businesses missed out on.
And with SEO constantly changing, especially with AI search in the mix, consistency matters more than ever. It’s not a set-and-forget strategy. Stop investing, and you risk losing momentum while your competitors keep moving.
Stick with the right strategy, though, and those results have the chance to keep growing.
